It is not factual the VP led the sugar workers’ struggles during the days of the Coalition

Dear Editor,

I had to chuckle when I saw Mr. Haseef Yusuf’s response to my letter, which appeared in June 13, 2022. I must admit, Editor, I had to admire the writing style of the gentleman and was a bit envious indeed. While I cannot ever dream to be as eloquent as he is, it appears I got under his skin, though it was not my intention. The fact that he said he searched high and low to seek me out caused me to think I was important. Editor, I am far from important but just an ordinary person, but contrary to the linguistic skills, I am indeed a real person.

Mr. Yusuff claimed he looked at the video during the VP’s visit but he did not see what I heard. I have no reason to doubt him. But what I heard, live and in person, was the VP claiming to lead the sugar workers struggles during the days of the Coalition, completely ignoring the efforts of the GAWU. I saw the President saying the same at the Enmore Martyrs’ commemoration activity. That, Editor, is not factual though I do recognise the VP playing a very active role in lending support and solidarity during that period.

Editor, Mr. Yusuff, using his imagination it appears, decided to lump me in with his former cohorts of the Coalition. I want to let the gentleman know that he can sling all the mud he wants but I remind him that the past has oftentimes demonstrated its ability to catch up with people. I say no more. But for the benefit of Mr. Yusuff, please be assured I have the highest regards and respect for Mr. Jagdeo. I recognise his efforts both past and present though I may not always see eye-to-eye with him.

Sincerely,
Surendra Drepaul
