The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association [GGDMA] has expressed its sadness over the death of miner and dredge owner, Donald Gouveia aka Danny, who perished on Monday, June 13, 2022 following the collapse of a pit he was working in at Micobie Backdam, Region 8.

The miners’ body, in a press release acknowledged the mining sector to be a high risk, hazardous industry, and is urging miners to follow good occupation health and safety practices. The GGDMA, according to the release, has over the years appealed to its members, and the general mining community, to adhere to and implement good safety practices. The role of proper and sound planning in ensuring better productivity and safety should be well recognized, GGDMA says. Based on the results of various Commissions of Inquiry into mining incidents, “we believe that many of the incidents that resulted in fatalities could have been avoided with better planning.”

GGDMA is urging miners to adopt practices and technology that not only increase productivity but also the safety and health of workers.
