Dear Editor,
The length of time spent on remand and still the prosecution could not provide evidence to prove its case is indeed a sad ‘travesty and an indictment upon the criminal justice system’, (SN June 21).
The lamentations and exhortations of the trial judge, as the hapless prosecutor tried in vain to salvage a losing case, exemplifies that the office of the public prosecutor is losing too many cases of recent, due to poor preparation, lack of evidence among other shortcomings.
There was no other recourse but to set free the defendant and the prosecution must rue its deficiencies in this particular matter.
Would the state compensate for ‘a grave injustice’ done?
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
