Political interference is dangerous for Sports Guyana

Dear Editor.

It was brought to my attention via SN press report (Emmerson Campbell) dated Friday, June 17 2022 and captioned, ‘GOA ratifies age amendment, Juman Yassin won’t be able to run for another term.’ Allow me to say, thank you to the reporter, E. Campbell for this report because I was clueless what actually transpired. Mr. Kalam Juman-Yassin, as President of the Guyana Olympic Association served with distinction for the years he steered that Sports Body of Guyana…There is no question about that.

Voting is one thing, but voting with political interference within any Sporting Body/Federation becomes toxic and dangerous for Sports Guyana…I have always known Sports Federations/Bodies supposed to be independent and I totally condemn the unethical behavioural practice of political interference by the Government of the day. Perhaps the Government of the day should now have state run sports and do away with all sports federations/bodies of Guyana.

It is now a clear indication that whomever is the next President of the Guyana Olympic Association within a month from now via their elections, that person will be labelled as a Government elected President of GOA or politically associated President of GOA…Sadly sad for Sports Guyana.

Sincerely,

Trevor Pemberton
