I find it disrespectful that the Merriman Mall project would be undertaken without residents being informed

Dear Editor,

Recently, I passed along the Merriman Mall. I was shocked and angry at what I saw. That entire stretch of land, from Vlissengen Road to Albert Street, looks ugly and untidy. It seems as though someone or some agency, I am not sure if is the Council, has been digging up parts of the Mall to run a pipe under the surface of that facility. I find it disgusting and disrespectful that they would undertake such a project without informing the residents, who reside in communities contiguous to that area, and generally citizens, who live or do business in the city.

Why are citizens being treated with such disdain? No one has said anything about that pipe; the purpose for it and how it will affect the Pan-African Gardens, and newly built stalls by those barbers and hairdressers, who are now occupying the mall. Or is it that those, who got the contract, and executing the works don’t think that the people who are likely to be affected by those works don’t matter or are not important enough to be consulted?

Sincerely,

Deborah Charles
