Team Guyana finishes with five-medal haul

Team Guyana finished with a five-medal haul, a silver and the remainder bronze when the curtain came down on the inaugural Caribbean Games last night in Guadeloupe. 

Thanks to the heroics of Track and Field athletes, Chantoba Bright and Joanna Archer, swimmers, Raekwon Noel and Zara Crane and the 3×3 Basketball team, the local outfit was able to earn its place (15th) onto the medal table which was topped by Cuba followed by Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago.

Bright, finished third in the long jump, Archer second in the 800m final, Noel third in the Men’s 100m Butterfly, while Crane was also third in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke.

The basketball team which comprised  Stanton Rose, Timothy Thompson, Kimol Grimmond and Yonnic Tappin also ended with a bronze. 

In an immediate reaction last night, Chef-de-Mission of the sojourn, Deion Nurse, told this publication  that he was “Elated that the athletes could go out there and do as well as they did. The hard work and tireless work has paid dividends. We made serious sacrifices and we were able to make and be a part of history.”

More than 800 U-23 athletes from 29 countries inclusive of Guyana were represented in front of sport leaders and fans during the June 29 to July 3 event. 

Team Guyana’s contingent competed in the disciplines of Track and Field, Basketball 3×3 and Swimming.

The disciplines which were contested during the multi-sport, Regional championship event were Track and Field, Basketball 3×3, Cycling, Futsal, Judo, Swimming and Netball.

The first edition of the Games catered for countries in the Caribbean, Central American country, Belize and South American countries, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It was overseen by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC).
