Construction of East Coast Paediatric Hospital to start in two months – Anthony

Construction of a state-of-the art paediatric and maternal hospital on the East Coast of Demerara, will begin in two months and its services will be free, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony stated yesterday.

Dr Anthony made the disclosure during a ministerial outreach at Buxton, East Coast Demerara. Speaking on the need to improve available health care for children, the minister said that the hospital will be equipped to perform cardiac and other surgeries for them free of cost.

According to Dr Anthony, the hospital will comprise a modern operating theatre, Accident and Emergency unit and state-of-the-art labs. The minister noted that there would be no need for children to travel overseas for heart surgeries anymore.

In February, President Irfaan Ali, announced that the contract for the construction of the hospital was awarded to VAMED, an Austrian company, through a programme with the government of Austria. Prior to the awarding of the contract President Ali had stated in September of last year that the Austrian government was interested in constructing a children’s and maternal hospital in Guyana.

The Health Minister also disclosed plans for the construction of what he called a “one stop, one shop,” Diabetic Centre. He said residents will have all their diabetic needs met at this centre. He promised that Guyana will have world class health care which will improve the quality of life for all Guyanese.
