Victoria youths get training from CHPA

Several young leaders from the community of Victoria on the East Coast of Demerara have been trained in a variety areas through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA).

A press release from the CHPA said that the training was executed by its Community Development Department at the Victoria Primary School on Saturday.

The youths were trained in the areas of Developing Effective Communication and Conflict Manage-ment Skills; Developing Negotiation Skills; and Building Partnership and Community togetherness. Training on Housing Codes will also be facilitated at a later date.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, who was present throughout the proceedings, stressed the importance of grassroots leaders. The release quoted Rodrigues as acknowledging that grassroots leaders are crucial to the socio-economic development of communities and represent the link that connects Government and people. She further noted that the government, being aware that the country is on a path to rapid development, is also committed to working with all communities to ensure that all Guyanese benefit.

“It is important for us to come here to build your capacity and to empower our young people,” the release quoted Rodrigues as saying.

The seminar comes after the Victoria Community Development Council (CDC) approached the Ministry for assistance in training. Training on Housing Codes will also be facilitated at a later date. Follow-ing this initiative, the trainees will be used as point persons for the Government to collaborate with and streamline programmes and policies for the community’s development.
