D’Urban St man found guilty of property fraud, to serve 6-year sentence

A D’Urban Street man has been sentenced to six years in prison following a trial which found him guilty of fraud.

Kavil Reece appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on June 30 before Magistrate Dylon Bess who handed down the sentence.

The man was given four years for forgery and two years for attempting to commit a felony.

He had initially appeared before Chief Justice Faith McGusty on January 8, 2021, where he was faced with three charges and was released on $125,000 bail.

The charges which he had previously appeared for, alleged that Reece, on August 3, 2018, attempted to defraud one Clement Glasgow of $3 million by falsely pretending to be in position to be able to sell a property located at Lot 30 Barima Avenue, Bel Air Park, Georgetown.

On August 23, 2018, at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) head office, he had tried to defraud a clerk by applying for a certificate of land compliance knowing that it was fake.

Additionally, the man was charged again for fraud where he had obtained $250 million from Glasgow by falsely pretending to sell the aforementioned plot of land.

The man had pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Based on the facts presented to the court, during August of 2018, Reece contacted Glasgow and informed him that he had a plot of land to be sold for $7 million. Glasgow agreed and negotiated to buy the land for $3,250,000, after which he developed it at a cost of $12 million.

With the intention of fixing the false documents, Reece submitted a fake application for a certificate of land compliance to the GRA head office during that same month. However, GRA officers discovered that the signature was not that of the owner and also that the property was valued at $110 million.

The man was eventually arrested and charged with fraud.
