Chinese Association distances self from comment by member on VICE News programme

The Chinese Association of Guyana has distanced itself from the views expressed by one of its members in a programme broadcast by the US-based VICE News.

The allegations in the broadcast made by persons described as Chinese businessmen about bribery and money laundering has created consternation here.

In a statement yesterday, The Chinese Association said it has taken note of the recent video released by VICE News in which a member of the association and some individuals made some personal comments in the video.

“The Chinese Association of Guyana wishes to reiterate that the association is a non-profit, apolitical friendly society made up of persons of Chinese descent living or born in Guyana since. Est. In 1920. Our activities include learning of music, language, arts, dance and the promotion of mutual appreciation and understanding within the multi-cultural society of Guyana.

“Although the association respects the right of any individual to have his/her own political perspective, the association itself does not form any political view and is not reflected in any views expressed or adopted by individual members. Additionally, the association does not support any category of activities that comes at a detriment to the continuous development, well-being, and prosperity of Guyana”, the statement said.

It added that notwithstanding the allegations levelled at particular individuals in the VICE  documentary, The Chinese Association hopes that the public will take a moment to recognise that ”these individuals do not represent the wider Chinese community, by and large, members of the Chinese community are devoted to an earnest and hardworking means of livelihood for the well-being of their loved ones — just like all other persons in society”.

All in all, The Chinese Association of Guyana said it is equitably devoted to the well-being of all peoples of Guyana and works towards advancing harmony and mutual understanding and mutual appreciation.
