The probe into the death of 12-year-old Raiwattie Pooran remains open and so is the question about who should be held accountable for the accident that eventually claimed her life.

Pooran was struck down along the Industry Public Road, on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) on April 24th, 2022 and succumbed to her injuries seven weeks after the accident. Pooran sustained a broken hand, broken ribs,  a punctured lung and suffered from internal bleeding. The child was under the supervision of Bless the Children’s Home orphanage.

Then Director of Children’s Services and Head of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ann Greene, had previously told Stabroek News that an investigation was underway. It is unclear what the current status of that investigation is as it has since been reported that Greene is no longer with the Agency. When this newspaper contacted Pooran’s family, one aunt noted that they are at a loss regarding the investigation into Pooran’s death, and that they are still awaiting information whether the driver will be charged or not.

They also noted that they have not received a response from the orphanage since the child’s accident. Bless the Children’s Home has since said they will not be commenting on the accident.
