Taxi man charged with wounding bus driver

A taxi driver was yesterday granted $80,000 bail over the alleged wounding of a bus driver during a scuffle over a recent incident.

Nigel Joseph, 28, of Lot 720, Westminster, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge laid against him.

According to the charge, on July 16 at Brickdam, in the vicinity of Cornhill Street, Joseph unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Javid Ahmad.

The taxi driver was granted bail in the sum of $80,000 with the conditions that he stay a minimum of 5 feet away from Ahmad and not make any contact with him.  The matter was adjourned until August 10.

The court also heard that the defendant and the virtual complainant are known to each other, since Ahmad who is a bus driver would ply his trade at the Number 32 bus park, while Joseph operates a taxi at the Georgetown Stelling. Both places are in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market.

The defendant said that Ahmad’s bus had recently almost caused a vehicular collision with his taxi and that he drove off.

As such, on the day in question, at about 10:20 am, Joseph saw Ahmad at the Stabroek Market and approached him. An argument then ensued between the two and the defendant slapped and cuffed the man in his face causing him to fall to the ground and hitting his head, rendering him unconscious.

As a result, Ahmad was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted and released several days later.
