Callender, Shariff earn conditional Women’s Candidate Master Titles

Jessica Callender, and Sasha Shariff earned conditional Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Titles, following their exploits at the ongoing FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India at the Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre.

This was disclosed in a  release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). According to the release, both players have secured four wins in seven matches, with Callender earning her WCM title after Round 7 and Shariff securing her title in Round 8.

“Chess players are bestowed titles by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) based on their performance and are referred to by the titles before their name based on their ratings. It is a metric of a chess player’s rank. The WCM title will be added to their names once they achieve rating points over 1800. These titles have been earned for life and cannot be lost. Sasha Shariff is currently rated 1183 and Jessica is rated at 1295”, the release stated.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Team defeated Laos and the Central African Republic 3-1 respectively. They also drew with Oman. Pooja Lam earned her first point of the event against Sinnalon Sihavong of Laos, while Nellisha Jonson defeated Dasavong Moukda of Laos. Reserve member Anaya Lall, secured a win against Nathaela Baguida of the Central African Republic. On the other hand, the Men’s team defeated Brunei Darussalam.
