Peter Bayley’s 322 is the highest score in first division cricket

When Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) Trevon Griffith hit 300 against Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) at the former’s venue in Queenstown in March 2022, fans were questioning whose record the pugnacious left-hander was about to eclipse.

Was it Clive Lloyd, Roy Fredericks, Basil Butcher, Alvin Kallicharran, or Rohan Kanhai? The answer is not associated with any of the above mentioned.

The batsman with the highest score in first division cricket is GCC’s Peter Bayley. Playing for GCC against British Guiana Cricket Club (BGCC) at Bourda in the Parker Cup finals in 1941, Bayley scored 322, eclipsing the record which was held by R. Rohamon of the East Indian Cricket Club.

Rohamon scored 319 against GCC at Bourda in 1936 during the Garnett Cup Finals. The other batsmen with 300 plus scores in first division cricket in Guyana are Port Mourant’s Romain Etwaroo, who scored 304 against Skeldon in 1973, and Everest’s David Harper, scorer of 314 versus DCC at Queenstown in 1989.
