Shamby Yamat, the truck driver who allegedly crushed a Venezuelan national on Monday morning along the Sarah Johanna Public Road, on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The Guyana Police Force said Yamat, 32, of Lot 4 Sarah Johanna Village, EBD, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court #2, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing the death of Francisco Simosa.

Yamat pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $1 million. The matter was adjourned until Monday, August 29, 2022.

At the time of the accident, Yamat was the driver of a truck bearing registration number GYY 6047.

A Guyana Police Force statement had said that Simosa, a pedestrian, was standing facing north on the eastern parapet on the Sarah Johanna Public Road, while the truck was proceeding south along the eastern side of the same road. Yamat then drove the truck past Simosa, stopped and reversed. It hit the man and ran over him.

Simosa was picked up in an unconscious state by the police and public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police noted that a Breathalyzer test was conducted on Yamat but no trace of alcohol was found in his system.

Apparently, prior to being run over, Simosa was trying to make the driver aware that he was behind the vehicle but his warnings went unnoticed.
