An East Canje Berbice man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with murdering his estranged wife two weeks ago at Number 47 Village, Corentyne.

Baburam Suraj Ganpat, 37, appeared virtually at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alex Moore who also appeared virtually.

Magistrate Moore read the indictable charge to Ganpat which stated that on August 8 he murdered Cindy Ramchandar.

Police Prosecutor Mark Edwards told the court that the file was incomplete.

Ganpat was not required to plead and was remanded to prison. He will return to court on November 2, for report.

Ramchandar, 24, of Lot 134 Number 47 Village, Corentyne, was stabbed four times about her body. A post-mortem examination gave her cause of death as haemorrhaging due to multiple stab wounds.

The couple was married one year ago and were living at the suspect’s parents’ house in East Canje. However, two months ago, Ramchandar decided to separate from the man after she informed her mother that she was facing hard times and abuse at the hands of her husband.

Ganpat was also accused of attacking Ramchandar with a knife several days after they separated leaving her with cuts.
