Man dies on Rupert Craig Highway after crashing into tow truck

The police today said that 32-year-old Stephon Stewart of Charles Street, Georgetown died this morning after the vehicle he was driving  crashed into a tow truck on the Rupert Craig Highway.

Police in Regional Division 4’A’ are reporting a fatal accident that occurred on Saturday, August 20, 2022 about 03:10 hours on the Rupert Craig Highway which has resulted in the death of 32-year-old Stephon Stewart of Charles Street, Georgetown.

 

The accident involved motorcar PRR 7135 which was driven by the deceased, motorcar PKK 9331 driven by Adrian Montrose of One Mile Wismar, Linden, and motor lorry GAC 1297 which was being operated by Richard MacDonald, of Section ‘B’ Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.

 

Enquiries disclosed that motorcar PKK 9331 was proceeding west along the southern lane of Rupert Craig Highway when it was alleged by the driver that an unknown motor lorry which was proceeding in the said direction on the northern drive lane (southern carriageway) of the said road swerved left into the path of his vehicle causing him to swerve further left to avoid a collision and in doing so, he lost control of his vehicle and ended up submerged in a trench situated on the southern side of the road.

 

During the process of removing the motorcar from the trench by motor lorry GAC 1297 which was parked with its front facing west on the southern drive lane of the southern carriageway of the road with the hazard lights on, motorcar PRR 7135 crashed into the rear portion of the lorry.

 

The driver, Stephon Stewart was seen motionless in his vehicle after the collision.

 

32-year-old Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene by EMT.

 

The body of the deceased was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a post mortem examination.

 

The driver of the motor lorry and motorcar are in custody assisting with the investigation.
