Jason Gonsalves, who was initially remanded to prison last July on an attempted murder charge was yesterday granted bail of $400,000.

Gonsalves, 28, of Lot 59 D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court via zoom when the decision to grant bail was made. Additionally, the defendant was ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Police Headquarters Eve Leary every Monday and Friday at 9 am of each week.  The matter was then adjourned until September 14th.

The charge against the defendant stated that on July 18th at Mantra Restaurant and Lounge in Kitty, he discharged a loaded firearm at Deon Jerrick with the intent to commit murder. According to reports, Jerrick and friends, along with the suspect were involved in a heated argument which led to a ‘gun play.’ It was alleged that both Jerrick and Gonsalves drew guns which were discharged in each other’s direction.  In the melee, Jerrick suffered gunshot wounds but Gonsalves in a bid to escape ran south along Lamaha Street where he was apprehended by police. Gonsalves had initially pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge.
