President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday accepted the letters of credence from the new European Union Ambassador to Guyana, Rene van Nes at a ceremony which took place at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.
According to the EU website, van Nes is a Dutch national who has been working with the EU since 1991. He has served at EU Delegations in Suriname, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Before being appointed Ambassador, he was the Head of the Division for Conflict Prevention and Mediation Support.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Macroeconomics and Public Finance with a specialisation in economics in developing countries. He is a trained mediator and negotiator who speaks Dutch [mother tongue], English, German and French (moderate).
van Nes replaces Fernando Ponz Canto who was appointed here in September 2019.
