A taxi driver was last Friday remanded to prison after he was charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Thirty-nine-year-old Dexter Thompson of East La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where the charges were read to him.

Thompson denied that on September 6th at Robb Street, he had in his possession a .38 revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence.

It was further alleged that the defendant also had three live rounds of .38 ammunition to which he pleaded not guilty.

According to the facts which were heard in court, the Police Prosecutor said that on the day in question, at about 01:25 hrs, the defendant was seen ‘liming’ in the vicinity of Nova Hotel where a search was subsequently carried out on him.

During the search, the gun which Thompson allegedly had was found in his pants waist. It was said that the man told the police that he bought the firearm for his own protection.

Although Thompson pleaded for reasonable bail, the Magistrate refused and the man was remanded to prison.

The matter was adjourned until September 30th.
