Man charged over West Demerara hit-and-run fatality

The driver who allegedly struck down 42-year-old Azaad Khan along the Blankenburg Public Road was last Wednesday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Twenty-eight-year-old Vicky Balgobin of Lot 258 Area ‘G’, De Willem, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance to an injured person.

Balgobin who appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court denied the first charge and was remanded to prison. He pleaded guilty to the other two charges and was fined $40,000 or 12 weeks imprisonment.

The matters were then adjourned until October 26th, 2022.

Khan of Blankenburg, WCD, was struck down along the public road in the vicinity of the Blankenburg Nursery School on September 3rd by a black Allion motorcar.

The Police had reported that the said motorcar was proceeding west along the southern side of the public road at a fast rate, when it collided with Khan who was walking across the road from north to south.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell on the southern side of the roadway and his left leg was severed.

The man was then picked up and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by officers of the Community Policing Group where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
