D’Urban Backlands woman accused of stealing almost half a million in goods

A mother of five was on Wednesday arraigned in a city court on a charge of the simple larceny of items totaling $495,000.

Mia Richie, 52, of Thorn Drive, D’Urban Backlands, appeared in a city court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read the charge to her.

The charge against the woman stated that on July 1st at Lot 27 Cocorite Street, East La Penitence, she stole a pair of Tiffany glasses, valued $115,000, a pair of Michael Kors sandals valued $18,000, six pairs of Abercrombie jeans valued $108,000, a rice cooker worth $40,000, a barbeque grill valued $70,000, eight pairs of Victoria Secret boy shorts worth $8,000, ten Victoria Secret T-shirts valued at $40,000, amongst other items which amounted to $495,000 in total value. The items were the property of Ann Martin.

The court heard that on the day in question, the defendant went to her brother’s home at Lot 27 Cocorite Street, East La Penitence, where two barrels containing the items were being kept.  It was said that Richie went into one of the barrels and removed the mentioned items without the permission of Martin. According to reports, some of the items were recovered.

Richie pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $60,000 bail with the condition that she report to the East Ruimvedlt Police Outpost every other Friday until the conclusion of the matter.

The case against the woman was then adjourned until September 26.
