GTT aiming to up number of MMG+ agents

The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) has announced that it is seeking to extend access to its Mobile Money, Guyana (MMG+) service by increasing the number of agents beyond the 800-odd operatives currently providing the service across the country.

In a media release seen by the Stabroek Business the company said that the decision to offer more recruits to provide the service opens up an opportunity to grow their own businesses through the company’s “Agent Acquisition Campaign.” GTT said its new campaign to recruit additional agents also “allows ordinary Guyanese to provide a safe, convenient and transformative service for their communities, while earning commission to support themselves and families.”

The release set out the eligibility criteria for serving as an MMG+ agent which include operating “a registered business and (possession of) other legal documentation such as a valid form of identification.” GTT also requires that applications to become MMG+ agents be accompanied by copies of business registration, TIN certificate as well as proof of address.

New recruits to the service will be required to make a financial deposit which the release said, “will be added to your wallet so you can start earning commission immediately.”

The release lists various other ways in which recruited agents can earn commissions including “when persons pay bills, ‘cash out’ money from their wallets or pay for goods and services”.

MMG, Guyana’s first mobile financial service, was introduced here in 2013. The service has had a transformative impact on the range of money-related transactions including the payment of bills and various other cashless transactions.

GTT said that MMG+ has “partnered with several organizations, including the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women and ActionINVEST Guyana Inc to transform the lives of female entrepreneurs by providing a MobileMoney learning track in their new HerVenture app”.

It has also influenced convenience-related adjustments to the way bills are paid and other money-related transactions are affected. Consumer feedback suggests that the introduction of MMG+ has also had a wider positive impact on ease of doing business.
