Continued indifference to public health issues from the city to rural communities

Dear Editor,

It was instructive to note Mr. Deodat Singh’s observations about failures to attend to identified infrastructural deficits across communities – from the capital city to Mon Repos. And while the latter areas have attracted some public attention by officials in recent months, he has observed continued indifference to what are critical public health issues.

As for Bentinck Street, Georgetown, a street which may have been named after a colonial governor, it borders the infamous Tiger Bay which has survived from those times, ignored by every mayor, and every ‘independent’ Administration. The sink-hole mentioned is probably symbolic of the depth of neglect that small community of survivors has endured – by housing authorities and highly touted infrastructure agencies for a considerable time.

With its historical background consideration should be given to preserving it as a tourist attraction, so the ‘squatter’ can earn a living without ‘grants’.

Sincerely,

Elijah Bijay
