Vergenoegen fisher charged with killing brother

A 21-year-old fisherman was yesterday remanded over the killing of his brother during an argument at Vergenoegen in Region Three.

Sunil Cook also known as ‘Tall Man’ appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s  Court. He was charged with  the murder of his brother, Dave Cook, 20, who is also a fisherman. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until December 1st, 2022.

According to a police press statement, the incident occurred at the Vergenoegen sea wall on October 14th, 2022 at around 10:50 pm. A witness told the police that Dave told Sunil that he saw his girlfriend with another man in Parika.  Sunil became annoyed at the statement and an argument ensued between the brothers.

The witness said that she saw Sunil holding a knife before noticing Dave bleeding profusely from his lower abdomen.

The suspect fled the area and the police were contacted. The victim was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and then transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was admitted as a patient in a critical condition.

He died on October 15, 2022 at about 1:48 am while receiving treatment.
