As part of the ongoing efforts by the Protected Areas Commission to improve and uplift  green spaces, works have begun throughout the urban parks to revitalize these public spaces.

A release yesterday from the Commis-sion said that the National Park has benefited from the support of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to do works to improve drainage. The NDIA provided help to clear the canals around the National Park.

Recently the urban parks have also benefited from the intervention of Deodat Indar,

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works as part of the countrywide beautification initiatives.

The release said that Indar and his team undertook a massive clean-up of the Botanical Gardens over the weekend from Saturday October 22nd to Sunday October 23rd.

The Protected Areas Commission says it will continue to work with both the public and private sectors to rehabilitate and beautify the National Park, the Botanical Gardens, the Guyana Zoo, and all of the Urban Parks and Protected Areas under our purview.

The Protected Areas Commission is mandated by the Protected Areas Act of 2011 to manage, promote, maintain and expand the National Protected Areas System of Guyana (NPAS); this also includes the urban parks.

There are 5 protected areas and 4 urban parks within the NPAS. The protected areas of the NPAS are the Shell Beach Protected Area in Region 1, the Kaieteur National Park and Iwokrama Rainforest in Region 8, and the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area and the Kanashen Amerindian Protected Area in Region 9, the release said.

Of these 5, the PAC has direct oversight over the Shell Beach, Kanuku Mountains Protected Areas and the Kaieteur National Park. The PAC is also responsible for the National Park, the Botanical Gardens, and the Zoological Park in Region 4, as well as Joe Vieira Park in Region 3.
