Treat small matters with the urgency of great matters

Dear Editor,

Edgar G. Hoover of the FBI, years ago, once remarked that he is thankful for persons who report small crimes. This, he said, has led to the arrest of major criminals. I am thankful to persons who address small matters with the urgency of great matters. This may prevent major problems, as they say, small leopards become big leopards and big leopards kill. Recently, I utilised your letter page in relation to a non-functional landline. I saw positive results. Now this was not a matter of urgency now. But what if we were living in the time when this was our only communication link with the outside, matters of life and death. What then? Someone commenting stated that he or she does not care about me and my landline. Fine. But I do care about me and operational facilities. Stabroek News has been most kind in understanding human behaviour in accommodating in its letter page little things that bother people. I am happy for this. I once saw a woman with a child in her hands disembarking from a water taxi. She slipped but was grabbed quickly.

Just a small matter to many. But I reported the incident to Transport Department. Today, each water taxi has a bow rail which I advised. If my landline is not working, I will treat this dysfunctionality as a most serious issue to be highlighted and fixed. So the person who said he or she does not care. Your time will come when, if you neglect small matters, you will regret.

Sincerely,

Krishna Nand Prasad
