Following the approval from Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, nine senior officers within the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) on Friday received promotions, including the first female Senior Superintendent.

The promotion list which was recommended by the Prisons Director Nicklon Elliot, saw Mark Smith, Deoraj Gyandat, Kofi David and Olivia Cox being promoted to Senior Superintendents, while Officer Maxine Mourant and Michelle Boyce were promoted to Assistant Superintendents of Prisons.

Additionally, Sean Charles, David Shepherd and Christine George were promoted to Superintendents.

According to a release from the GPS, Cox is the first female rank to achieve such position while George is the longest serving member. It was said that she’s currently in her 34th year of service.

While congratulating the newly promoted officers, Benn at the presentation of instruments stressed on the need for them to show professionalism and empathy in the prison system since they are many challenges that the system faces on a daily basis.

He said that the system is one that has the responsibility to rehabilitate inmates and ensure that they are equipped with the necessary tools to contribute to society upon their release.

Moreover, the GPS Director Elliot advised the officers that they are now on a higher level of service, leadership and professionalism and should act like it.
