Rondell Chappel called ‘Devil’ is now awaiting sentencing after a jury yesterday afternoon unanimously convicted him of breaking into the home of a 15-year-old and raping her at knife-point.

The 12-member panel found Chappel, who was 33 years old at the time, guilty as charged of raping the teen between Septem-ber 5th and 6th of 2020.

The charge against him was for rape of a child under 16 years.

The Court had heard during the trial that at the time, the teen was at home alone.

Following the commencement of his trial, Chappel who was on bail, had absconded after the matter was adjourned.

Police had to subsequently issue a wanted bulletin which later led to his arrest.

Justice Sandil Kissoon who presided over the matter has deferred sentencing to December 16th, to first hear probation and other social impact reports.

Chappel was represented by defence attorney Ravindra Mohabir; while the State was represented by prosecutors Cicelia Corbin, Caressa Henry and Marisa Edwards.

The trial proceedings were heard in-camera at the Sexual Offences Court of the High Court in Demerara.
