President promises jobs to Leopold St youths

President Irfaan Ali yesterday told residents of Leopold Street in Werk-en-Rust that his Government wants to work with them and he promised construction jobs to youths in the area.

“Today, I am here because we are concerned about every single Guyanese. We are concerned about every single community, and the plan and programme that we have for the development of Guyana involves every single citizen”, he told residents, according to the Department of Public Information (DPI).

The President said that his Government is proactive because it is genuinely concerned about the well-being of the citizens of Guyana.

“It is not a plan in which people sit in front of cameras at a press conference and talk nonsense. It is not a plan that is hatched in Congress Place or in Freedom House. It is a plan that comes from the heart. It is a plan that comes from the programmes that we went to the elections with. And that programme is to bring prosperity to everybody.”

“Every community has the capacity to contribute positively to the development of our country … regardless of challenges, regardless of the history”, he said.

Ali urged those gathered to stand against being used as pawns and to “say to leaders that the time for divisive narrative has passed”.

He told the residents that the Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn as well as a team from the private sector, will return in the coming week to identify persons from the community to engage in training and job opportunities.

Over 50 ‘young men’ residing at Leopold Street and surrounding communities will soon be employed through government’s ongoing housing construction project, the President announced, according to DPI.

The President said that with the massive expansion in the housing sector, there is a high demand for workers.

“If you have 50 plus young men that have a skill in construction, on Tuesday we are going to meet… we are going to take them in the housing programme and we are going to work with them on the houses we have to build,” the President stated.

The President tasked Minister Benn and Commissioner of Police (ag), Clifton Hicken to immediately organise a two-week training for the interested workers.

The 14-day course will ensure the men work effectively and are brought up to speed with the standards of the PPP/C Government’s massively expanding home building exercise countrywide.
