(Trinidad Guardian) The T&T Chamber of Industry and Commerce (TTCIC) has called on the Government to act swiftly to address perennial flooding.

In a media release on Monday, the TTCIC said it is even open to discussions “to find a solution to the current situation and prevent further distress in the national community.”

The call comes as the Chamber says it’s concerned about the impact of flooding and the continuous reports of rainfall, flooding, landslips, collapsed roads and lack of water.

It said while the authorities cannot control the weather, authorities must do what is in its control to address these issues urgently to mitigate individual stress, loss of income, loss and damage of property and loss of production.

“We are therefore calling on the relevant agencies and Government ministries to act swiftly to address this pressing matter which occurs year after year. Regular maintenance and upgrades of water courses, water pumps, flood gates and other infrastructure can mitigate the extensive damage faced by many,” the release stated.

It also noted that businesses are being affected by the impacts of inclement weather.

“This ultimately accumulated significant losses and added to the expenditure of recovery, even as the recovery process from the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing. The actual figure for losses is yet to be determined,” the release said.

The joint chambers, consisting of AMCHAM T&T, Energy Chamber of Trinidad & Tobago, Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and Trinidad & Tobago Manufacturers’ Association, donated $250,000 to Sewa TT to support their flood relief efforts.

They acknowledged additional support will be required over coming days and weeks.

“The funds were donated to the Joint Chambers over time by members to assist with relief efforts related to natural disasters. This is another tangible example of the support that the private sector provides on issues of national concern,” the release from the joint chambers stated.

President of Sewa TT, Revan Teelucksingh, thanked the chambers, saying, “Sewa TT is happy to receive this support from the Joint Chambers. This will provide the stability we need to continue doing the work necessary to assist people.”

Sewa TT has been donating food and other relief items to flood victims.
