Improvised weapons, scissors, ganja, razor blades, and cell phones were among the items found when the Joint Services conducted a search at the New Amsterdam Prison on Thursday.

In a statement, the Guyana Prison Service said the search was conducted on Thursday between 06:00 hours and 09:00 hours.

The contraband items found were: a quantity of fermented wine, 10 cellphones, a Digicel Sim card, six pairs of scissors, 23 lighters, 24 razor blades, an improvised grater, 15 improvised weapons, three metal spoons, a fork, a knife, $4,660 in cash, 47 Ziploc bags containing a quantity of marijuana leaves, seeds and stem weighing 87 grammes, 30 cigarettes, 18 blades, 5 packs of bamboo, a small quantity of narcotics gums, two mirrors and an AirPods case.

The discovery of the items comes on the heels of a similar discovery at the Mazaruni Prison after a search there last Saturday.

The Mazaruni Prison search was carried out between 06:00 hours and 10:15 hours.

Three cellphones, 42 improvised weapons, eight chargers, 15 lighters, a knife, three scissors, and a quantity of suspected cannabis leaves, seeds, and stems were discovered. The narcotics were weighed and amounted to 116 grammes. The prohibited items were lodged at the Bartica Police Station.
