Suspects in chopping death of contractor at Annai still at large

One month after a contractor identified as Aries Matthew, was fatally chopped on Annai Access Road while trying to rescue his colleague from two attackers, police ranks of Region Nine are still searching for the suspects.

While Matthew was killed, his friend, Radesh Phulya, was injured in the attack. According to the police, Matthew and Phulya, along with three other colleagues, were in a white truck parked on the Annai Access Road, consuming beer.

Phulya reported that he was suddenly pulled out of the vehicle by the two attackers.  One was armed with a cutlass and he started to chop Phulya about his body. Matthew tried to intervene to stop the attack and the assailant chopped him on the right forearm and the chest.

The three colleagues of Matthew and Phulya fled and the assailants drove away in a car after inflicting the wounds.  Matthew and Phulya were later placed in the same white truck and taken to the Annai Health Centre, where Matthew was pronounced dead on arrival. The matter was subsequently reported to the Annai Police Station.

The information gleaned by the police so far suggests that the attack was as a result of Phulya speaking to a female teacher earlier that night at the Tractor Bar.
