Dear Editor,
It’s that time of year when prices rise and everyone is cashing in on the benefits to be derived. The recent strike by river taxis is just one example. Taxi drivers have upped their fares unconscionably and mini-buses are awaiting the opportunity to do likewise. Guyana, the land of opportunities has become a burden on many travellers at the mercy of the private operators.
It is noted that the striking operators have resumed operations but some are charging the increased fare (SN Dec 11). It might only be a matter of time before another strike is called. This time it could escalate with all river routes joining along with the mini-buses. That would indeed be a calamitous and chaotic situation. Are the authorities prepared for such an eventuality?
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
