Attacker in custody after Angoy’s Avenue boy stabbed to death

An Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam man yesterday morning went berserk and attacked a resident with a knife after which he turned his attention to a 15-year-old, pinning him in a nearby drain and fatally stabbing him.

Dead is Carlos Leung, a student of the New Amsterdam Special Needs School and of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue. Leung reportedly sustained five stab wounds in the left side of his abdomen, arm, shoulder and behind his ear.

Carl Singh, 26, a labourer of Timmers Dam remains hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital in a serious condition. He reportedly sustained three stab wounds.

The  attack occurred  just around 6 am at Timmers Dam.

According to residents in the area, Singh was at a shop purchasing feed for his chickens when the suspect identified as Eion La Fleur, 41, of Mai Mai Dam, Angoy’s Avenue arrived at the shop concealing a sharp object under his shirt.

The shop owner who asked not to be named told Stabroek News, that Singh saw La Fleur with a sharp object under his shirt and queried what he was doing with it. However, before Singh could say anything else, the assailant began stabbing the man causing him to run up the road with the stabber in pursuit.

Leung’s mother, Michelle Bess, 53, who was inconsolable at the New Amsterdam Police Station yesterday morning moments after the attack, said that Leung was on their bridge with his bicycle preparing to head over to school for a Christmas party when he saw the men running in their direction.

She said in a matter of seconds the suspect latched on to Leung and began stabbing him after which he threw him in a drain and sat on him as he continued to stab him under the water.

“I run come try to save my son but he turn to stab me and I had to run in the yard back and I just start scream and scream and nobody na come out”, the woman stated yesterday.

According to residents in the area, it was only after a group of men, one armed with a cutlass, approached the attacker and pushed him off the lad that he stopped stabbing.

“I beg them to pull out Carlos and them pump he stomach and he bring up mud water and that was the last breath he take”, the grieving mother said.

The two victims and the attacker were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where Leung was pronounced dead on arrival, while Singh was admitted. The attacker was treated for minor chop injuries which were reportedly dealt by residents as they tried to get him to let go of Leung during the attack.

As of yesterday afternoon, the attacker remained in custody, while the suspected murder weapon, a knife, was retrieved from the drain.

Bess yesterday stated that she could not come to terms with the death of her son. She said that when he was  nine years old he was struck in the head while at school causing him to have constant seizures since. As such, she enrolled him in the New Amsterdam Special Needs School so as to ensure that he received an education despite his challenges.

The mother said the young man was very outgoing and helpful. She noted that he was kind to neighbours and was always willing to assist them.

Persons who live in the vicinity of the attacker said the man moved into the village about nine months ago. According to them there were reports that the man received treatment from the National Psychiatric Hospital before moving into the village. According to residents, the man kept to himself and residents would avoid getting  in his way.
