Afghanistan debarring women from tertiary education ultimately makes their society poorer

Dear Editor,

Women are debarred from attending universities in Afghanistan. The move has sparked international condemnation by several human rights groups who view the decision, rightly, as a denial of the right to higher education for women. Since assuming office the Taliban administration has taken several measures to limit women’s participation in public life. This is most unfortunate given the fact that women constitute roughly half of the population. Moreover, women are known to have superior organizational and management skills and by limiting their participation in public life, society is all the more poorer.

Sincerely,

Hydar Ally
