We, the undersigned, note with great interest, the contribution to your Sunday Edition (December 18, 2022) by weekly columnist Dr. Ian McDonald, titled “The Guyana Sugar Industry: The dynamic decades of the mid-20th Century.”
The customarily well-written column eloquently summarized the contribution to the sugar industry in Guyana of Sir Jock Campbell and more substantively identified several highly talented Guyanese cadres who helped develop and grow the industry. Many of the names cited have publicly identified Harold Davis Snr CCH as their mentor and as playing a seminal role in their development and that of the industry.
The column, significantly neglects to acknowledge the important role and the contributions of Harold B. Davis (Snr) who, as Education and Training Officer, and later as Personnel Director, developed and managed the Booker Cadet and Management Training Programmes from which most of the outstanding Guyanese managers mentioned in the column, benefitted. These persons, a few of whom are living, will readily speak of Mr. Davis’ role as a mentor; they can be contacted for confirmation of these statements.
It is noteworthy that Harold B Davis Snr, was not mentioned in the said column, and we accordingly recognize this omission.
