Citizens’ assembly on poverty reduction strategies could be useful

Dear Editor,

Please allow me to congratulate you on your pertinent and powerful editorial yesterday on the state of poverty in Guyana. This might be a topic on which to convene a civil society-sponsored Citizens’ Assembly on Poverty Reduction Strategies. Carried out with objectivity and sensitivity, it could be of assistance to both Government and Opposition, and certainly to the people of Guyana. When I performed the functions of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, I launched an Experts’ Study on human rights and poverty reduction strategies that might have ideas of interest to such a Citizens’ Assembly. All good wishes to you, your staff and your readership for the coming year.

Sincerely,

Bertrand Ramcharan
