Crime reduction figure for 2016 was only for five months

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Police Force would like to respond to a Stabroek News Editorial published yesterday (Thursday, January 5, 2023) titled ‘Grand promises’, a section of which was erroneous, in which the percent of reduction in serious crimes was inaccurately misconstrued.

There is a vast disparity in the editorial as it relates to the figures alluded to by the President for 2022, as compared with the figures compared with for 2016. While the 19 percent reduction is accurate for May 2016, it only represents a reduction for five months as compared to the figure for 2022 which represents a reduction for the entire year.

Figures usually change and percentages vary, especially when juxtaposed with figures from monthly to yearly periods.

The Guyana Police Force wishes to publicly state that an overall reduction of 20.6 percent was recorded for the year 2022 from January 1st to December 31st, the highest percentage of reduction in serious crimes from 2013 to date.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Ramotar
