It has been two weeks since 78-year-old Ramdai Balkarran was murdered while she was sleeping in her Paramakatoi Village, Region Eight home and the police are yet to apprehend her killer/s.

A police source yesterday told Stabroek News that the investigation into the murder is ongoing.

During the initial stage of the investigation, two men were arrested at Kato Village. However, they were subsequently released without being charged.

The body of Ramdai called “Jean”, a shopkeeper, was discovered on the morning of December 29, 2022. There were bruises to her nose and forehead.

It is suspected that she was murdered between 19:30 hrs on December 28 and 06:30 hrs on December 29, 2022.

An autopsy later revealed that Ramdai had been suffocated and beaten. It is suspected that Balkarran’s killer/s gained entry to her house by removing several louvres from a window. A mesh fence at the back of the yard had also been cut open.

Reports had revealed that at around 19:30 hrs on December 28, Ramdai and her husband, Basil Balkarran were talking after which she retired to bed and he proceeded to his prayer room.

The following morning, this newspaper was told that when Basil woke up and called for Ramdai, he got no answer.

The door to the house was secured from inside and he observed that several louvre panes had been removed from a window.

As such, Basil immediately raised an alarm and persons in the village went into the house where they found Ramdai lying motionless on her bed.

In an interview with this newspaper, Basil had said that he was demanding justice. He told Stabroek News that he hopes the perpetrator of the crime is caught soon.

“I have to get justice. They can’t go into the comfort of people’s home and slaughter them,” Basil said.

According to Basil, hundreds of thousands of dollars was also stolen from Ramdai. “X amount of money. Going into the hundreds of thousands. But we cannot ascertain the exact amount,” he told this newspaper.
