The Region Two Mashramani committee yesterday officially unveiled its calendar of activities in observance of Guyana’s 53rd year of republican status. A cultural programme was held at the Anna Regina Car Park and featured dances, live steel pan music, calypso, and addresses by regional officials.   The programme was organised after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Declaring the activities open was Region Two Chairperson, Vilma De Silva, who informed that the activities will be celebrated under the theme, “Mixing and Mashing as One Guyana”. She said that every sector in the Region has been transformed and Essequibians should be proud to join in the celebration.

“We will be celebrating as a One Guyana, as one people together, we need to be proud of our achievements.”

The Regional Chairperson also reminded the gathering that the COVID-19 virus is still a threat and urged those who are not yet vaccinated to take their shots.

Meanwhile, Regional Executive Officer Susannah Saywack informed the audience of the various activities planned. She explained that the Region’s Mash committee as well as the Department of Education will be hosting activities to commemorate Mashramani.

Some of the activities planned include: a Differently-Abled day of sports, storytelling in schools, a nature walk, dramatic poetry, a cultural extravaganza, a day of sports, decorative building and school gardening, a day of cleaning up and cooking out, and the flag raising ceremony. The Education Department will host a Dance, Masquerade, and Costume competition. The Children’s Regional Road Parade will take place on February 21 and the Grand Road parade on February, 23.

The Region’s Mash committee earlier Friday morning hosted an interfaith service which was held in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council.

Persons gathered at the park to witness the launching and schoolchildren from various schools were also part of the programme.
