Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana, Carlos Amador Pèrez Silva  has thanked the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) for the humane treatment of migrants from his country.

In recent years thousands of Venezue-lans have poured across the Guyana border particularly in the northwest to escape harsh conditions in their country.  Many have settled in the north west and have been provided with a range of assistance. A number of them have also migrated to other parts of the country and taken up a variety of jobs.

According to a GDF press release, the Ambassador paid a courtesy call on Chief of Staff (ag) Brigadier Godfrey Bess on January 10th at Camp Ayanganna.

The release said that they discussed a number of areas during which the Ambassador “expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Guyana for the humanitarian treatment meted out to Venezuelan immigrants”.

The Ambassador also said that his government plans to increase areas of mutual interest through bilateral relations and indicated his availability in this regard.

Bess in response noted the Govern-ment’s aim of continuing to provide humanitarian aid to Venezuelan immigrants, and further, he communicated the Force’s intention to maintain its presence on the frontier to monitor all cross-border movements, the release said.

Also present during the courtesy call were Colonel General Staff, Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts; Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Shahoud and Staff Officer One Special Duty, Lieutenant Colonel Eon Murray.
