The reality of life in Guyana is that of a dirt poor country

Dear Editor

The 781.9 billion dollar budget for 2023 is dubbed the largest budget in Guyana’s history. Last year’s budget stood at 552.9 billion yet the poor in Guyana felt the brunt of

inflation. People went hungry like never before. The price of local produce was unaffordable; bora and pumpkin were fit to be only consumed by the wealthy. I will not elaborate because all Guyanese are aware of last year’s suffering.

Guyana is an oil rich nation and the world sees it as the fastest growing economy. Its population is way under a million people but the reality of life in Guyana, even today, is that of a dirt poor country where the majority of people are poor and live off of $1200 dollars a day (US 5. 73). This year’s budget is primarily about building infrastructure and that’s where the con is.

The poor man’s dismal reality will worsen in 2023 while government officials will build more casinos, lush hotels, apartment buildings and resorts. Billions in contracts to build roads etc., will go to handpicked contractors. The PPP sycophants, lackeys and cronies will take to social media to cuss about us not appreciating progress while they themselves live in squalor.

Sincerely,
