Security guard accidentally shoots self, vendor at Bourda Market

Mohan Mootoo, a 20-year-old security guard of C. Mohan Security Services, accidentally shot himself and a 15-year-old vendor on Robb Street, Bourda on Wednesday night.

According to the police press release, on Wednesday night at about 22:00 hours on Robb Street in the vicinity of Bourda Market, Mootoo claimed that he accidentally discharged a round from the 9mm Taurus pistol while clearing the firearm. It resulted in Mootoo shooting himself in the palm of his hand with the bullet exiting and hitting the 15-year-old who was assisting his brother at their stall at Bourda Market.

Mootoo told investigators that he took out the firearm from the waist of his pants to “clear it” when a shot accidentally went off.  The round struck his left palm, exited and hit the 15-year-old. The teen was hit in the right side of his abdomen. The firearm and ammunition were seized and lodged.

At the time of the incident, Mootoo was on duty at a stall on Robb Street owned by the victim’s brother. The security guard was armed with a .9mm Taurus pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition, which were issued to him.

Mootoo has been employed by C. Mohan Security Services for only two weeks. He admitted to investigators that he is not a Supernumerary Constable and is also not trained to use a firearm.

A search was conducted for the spent shell, but it was not found.

The teen victim and Mootoo were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and admitted. Their conditions are said to be stable. Investigations are in progress.
