DURBAN, South Africa, CMC – West Indies all-rounders Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers lacked impact with both bat and ball, leaving Durban Super Giants with an eight-wicket defeat to Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 here yesterday.

Choosing to bat first at Kingsmead, Super Giants buckled for 80 at the start of the 19th over, the left-handed Mayers top-edging the first ball of the contest to third man off seamer Wayne Parnell (2-12) and Holder following in the ninth over, holing to deep cover off Man-of-the-Match left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy (3-12) for 10. Heinrich Klaasen, at number four, was the only batsman to pass 20, top-scoring with 31 from 24 deliveries with a four and a brace of sixes.

He anchored the best stand of the innings – 31 for the fourth wicket with Holder – before the last seven wickets tumbled for 29 runs.

In reply, Capitals also succumbed to a first-ball fate when Englishman Phil Salt drove medium pacer Mayers to mid-off to perish without scoring.

However, opener Will Jacks punched 56 from 25 balls and Theunis de Bruyn, an unbeaten 21 from 19 balls, to see their side comfortably home in a 78-run, second wicket stand. Mayers conceded 12 runs from two overs which yielded the one wicket while Holder’s solitary over leaked 10 runs.

For Super Giants, the defeat was their third in five games and they now lie one from bottom on eight points while Capitals stretched their lead at the top of the standings with their fourth win in five games, to move to 18 points.
