Do we have a crime problem, Mr. President?

Dear Editor,

A recent report shows that Guyana is in the top ten of crime ridden countries in the world. Not only ordinary offences but the most brutal, grotesque and vicious crimes.  It points to a collapse of our social mores, the failure of our court system and the glaring inability of our elected leaders to curtail it.

In spite of all our natural riches, Guyana is bankrupt when it comes to its most important resource – human capital.  Regarding crime, law, order and justice – the Guyanese people are cursed to have uncaring and inept politicians.   Both in the government and in the opposition.   The never ending revelation of heinous and barbaric crimes, reveals a deafening silence from our elected leaders. It seems like they do not care.

Almost daily, the Guyanaese populace is greeted with criminal behaviour that stretches the imagination of credulity. Our shock is only magnified by the anger at our politicians, who have abdicated their responsibility and instead spends most of their time arguing about “oil money.” So, between your international jaunts and foreign excursions, ordinary Guyanese would like to know…do we have a crime problem, Mr. President?

Sincerely,

Chitrakha Persaud
