A huge fire this afternoon destroyed the Parika Marketing Centre in Region Three. The fire began at 3 pm.
Commander of Region 3, Mahendra Sewnarine told Stabroek News that the entire centre had been destroyed. As of 5 pm the rear of the structure was still ablaze.
Vendors have sustained major losses.
More than 20 vendors are now counting their losses. It is being suggested that the fire was due to welding which was being done by workmen who are currently rehabilitating the Centre. It is believed that this resulted in sparks coming into contact with a stall that sells flares, squibs and other explosives.
Parika hosts the major market in the region.
Four fire tenders are at the scene. There is no word yet on how it might have started.
