Recruitment of Deputy Chief Election Officer has been in pipeline for nearly two years

Dear Editor,

GECOM awoke from its slumber yesterday morning and proposed for immediate discussion a course of action to provide for the enfranchisement of the registrants who are being registered under the Continuous Registration Exercise by virtue of which they will not be in the local government voter’s register. This matter was raised two weeks ago and not addressed. The CEO sought an immediate resolution yesterday. However, the opposition-nominated commissioners demanded time to discuss and consult on the matter. This was reluctantly granted with the Commission now poised to meet today. In the meantime, Commissioner Rohee for the fourth week has held up the recruitment process for the DCEO by virtue of his non-submission of his shortlist.

This matter had been in the pipeline for close to two years and has not gotten urgent attention although the unlawful creation of the position of Operations Coordinator was premised on the need to relieve the CEO from overload since there was no DCEO.

Yours faithfully,

Vincent Alexander
