Fine, community service for US man with ‘joints’

A visitor from the US who tried to smuggle twelve rolled ‘joints’ of cannabis into Guyana on Thursday was ordered to do three days of community service and fined a total of $30,000 after he pleaded guilty to the possession of narcotic charge that was read to him.

The defendant, 30-year-old Delroy Julius Seaforth of New Jersey, United States of America, made his appearance at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Judy Latchman where he admitted to having in his possession 16.8 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking on February 23 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

In recognition of his decision to plead guilty and in so doing not waste the court’s time, he was sentenced to 3 days of community service in Guyana and was fined $30,000. According to reports, Magistrate Latchman took into account that the man is a US national, a first time offender, and the fact that he entered Guyana for the purpose of a funeral and will depart on February 28. As a result of his early departure date, the Magistrate ordered him to report to the Vigilance Police Station on February 24, 25, and 27, at 9am to carry out his three-day community service.

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) had reported that they were conducting regular duties at CJIA when they intercepted a male incoming passenger whom they carried out a search on. Twelve rolled ‘joints’ suspected to be cannabis were found.

He was subsequently taken to CANU’s headquarters along with the suspected narcotic which tested positive for cannabis and when weighed, showed a total of 16.8 grams.
