At least three persons were injured just around 9 pm yesterday when a container truck careened into a crusade site on the Victoria Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

At least seven vehicles, including two mini buses, were also badly damaged. Since Saturday evening the Victoria Seventh-day Adventist Church has been holding nightly prayer meetings at the site where a white tent has been erected.

The preaching had ended and the church was having what is called an altar call, which involves prayer and encouraging persons to give their lives to Jesus. It was at this point worshippers said they heard a loud noise when the truck crashed into a car that was parked a short distance from the site. It then careened into the site and slammed into several vehicles.

Three men who were in front of the tent were injured with at least one suffering a broken leg. Worshippers said it was the vehicles that saved them as the truck would have ended up under the tent where they were. Children and other worshippers were left traumatized. They were forced to break a neighbour’s fence to exit the site as the entrance was blocked by the truck and damaged vehicles.
